It may sound strange to people in the West but it is a fact that most African school children have never owned a book of their own, of any kind. In the rural areas where most African children live, there are no libraries, few bookshops and whatever money is available is so vital for keeping the family alive it cannot be used to buy books. So teachers wing it with the few books they can get and the children depend on their memories and tattered notebooks to learn their lessons.
According to the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), 40 percent of school-age children in Africa do not attend school. Forty-six million African children have never set foot in a classroom. In the classrooms of rural Africa, 10-20 students may share one textbook.
Nascent Solutions has been shipping containers of books to rural school libraries, orphanages, adult literacy programs, and community resource centers.
We accept all text books, for all grades, as well as other youth-appropriate reading materials, for a network of libraries that we are establishing in schools and communities in our countries of operation. Donating your used books to us or the funds to help ship those that have been donated would help to give a child thousands of miles away the gift of education, a bright future for the child and that of her family and her community.
